Walkway will help pedestrians reach safely the business district north of I-80
Construction on the pedestrian bridge over Interstate 80 in Ottawa should be completed — and the bridge open by Thanksgiving.
Construction on the bridge was made possible when the Illinois Department of Transportation awarded the city of Ottawa $2 million for the project, which has a total cost of $2.5 million.
The bridge will make it safer for pedestrians to cross I-80, especially those looking to go to work at several of the businesses north of the interstate.
Safety while crossing the bridge has been an issue because the sidewalk ends north of West Etna Road. The sidewalk didn't continue again until north of I-80 on West Stevenson Road, meaning anyone walking had to cross onto the median so they aren't walking on the shoulder.
