Illinois Valley Community Hospital held drive-thru flu shots Thursday afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. to family members of hospital employees, with the event serving as a test run for when there copuld be a COVID-19 vaccine available to the public.

The hospital had many stations set up to check the visitors' information and possible novel coronavirus symptoms. The cars passed each checkpoint before reaching the station, where the shot was administered.

The entire process took as little as three to four minutes to complete.

Community Relations and Marketing Director Joan Fernandez said the hospital wanted to take the opportunity to set them up for when a vaccine is available.

"Every hospital and every community in the United States is supposed to be preparing for the mass infusion of the vaccine," Fernandez said.

Fernandez also said the public really enjoys the drive-thru aspect of the shots, making it easier to offer the future vaccine to as many people as possible in a shorter period of time.

The shots were given at the IVCH 6th Street Office Building parking lot — the same location where the hospital conducts daily COVID-19 tests.
