No injuries reported
A car exploded while it was being crushed Wednesday morning and it ignited a junk pile at Cimco Recycling on West Norris Drive in Ottawa.
Kari Castelli was across the street at Festivities Unlimited when the explosion occurred.
"My husband was inside and heard a loud explosion that shook the whole building," Castelli said. "He thought one of the houses behind us blew up."
Castelli said the fire didn't look very big at first; she went right back inside but went out to look further after she heard all the sirens.
"It was getting bigger, with a lot more smoke," Castelli said. "I could hear some smaller explosions after that. The wind today is terrible, too. I feel so bad for those firefighters.
No injuries were reported, said Ottawa Fire Chief Andy Borkowski.
Ottawa, Grand Ridge, Marseilles and Wallace firefighters responded at about 11 a.m. More trucks were called to the scene, as there are few hydrants in the area.
The dark smoke cloud could be seen as far south as Grand Ridge and the cloud billowed above the recycling facility on U.S. 6.
