Two died in this Sept. 25 accident on Interstate 80 near mile marker 86.

The La Salle County Coroner's Office on Thursday released the names of the two individuals who perished last Friday, Sept. 25, during a six-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 that closed the highway for five hours.

Nicole L. Currier, 47, of La Salle, and Ryan T. Hart, 43, of Joliet, were killed in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.

Six vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred about 9:20 a.m. Friday as traffic slowed or stopped on I-80 westbound between Utica and Ottawa.

A Freightliner semitrailer carrying automotive batteries failed to reduce speed and struck three vehicles, according to the ISP report, causing the truck and three other vehicles to become fully engulfed in flames and damaging two others.

All westbound lanes of I-80 were closed at 9:24 a.m., with the lanes reopened at 2:37 p.m.
