Authorities still investigating cause of the crash
A man and a woman died Friday morning in a multiple-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 between Ottawa and Utica, according to the La Salle County Coroner's Office.
The identity of the victims are being withheld pending notification of their families, the coroner's office said. Autopsies will be performed Saturday.
The crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. Friday at mile marker 86 westbound. Utica, Ottawa and Wallace firefighters were called to extinguish fires at the scene.
The westbound lanes of the interstate were closed from the time of the crash until 2:45 p.m. Friday, according to Illinois State Police.
The Illinois State Police District 17 will issue more information about the crash when it becomes available. The accident is under investigation by the coroner's office and the state police.
