Nancy Grubich battled COVID-19 for more than a month in the ICU at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
“She was slowly getting better, then all of a sudden, she took a turn for the worse in a couple of days,” said her son, Jeff Grubich.
Nancy Grubich died May 8 at age 66.
She was a special education teacher’s aide for Peru elementary schools for 26 years before retiring in 2017.
“She was just an amazing woman,” said Jeff, who lives in Peru. “She cared about being a teacher’s aide and helping kids growing up. She was an amazing mother.”
In memory of his mother, Jeff is organizing a golf outing called “Putt COVID” on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Deer Park Golf Club in Oglesby.
“With everybody being outside, I feel it’s a good place to have a fairly large group of people,” Jeff Grubich said. “We want to be able to do it outdoors rather than inside in a confined area.”
The golf outing will be limited to 32 teams. So far, 20 teams are signed up.
The cost is $75 to golf, which includes 18 holes and a meal. The event will include raffles, games at certain holes and a band.
“(Fundraising) is going pretty good right now,” Jeff said. “We always welcome others. I’m constantly getting them either from individuals or businesses. The community has been amazing about it and are being very supportive.”
Proceeds from the event will go to OSF Healthcare. Jeff Grubich said OSF was chosen for the care it provided his mother as well as himself after he had a stroke in October 2019.
“I wanted to pay respects to the staff,” Jeff said.
