New indictment in Ottawa-Streator crackdown of illegal guns

One of the four men rounded up in a crackdown of felony gun possession was indicted Tuesday for allegedly trying to get a witness to change his testimony.

A La Salle County grand jury convened Tuesday and indicted Nicolas J. Reynolds, 22, of Ottawa, with harassment of a witness, a charge filed June 10 for making what prosecutors termed “a threat of injury” to a witness in his pending gun case.

However, Reynolds was out on bond awaiting trial on two counts of unlawful sale of firearms, one of them to a felon, and was facing up to five years in prison if convicted. By law, crimes committed while out on bond must be served with back-to-back prison terms; Reynolds now faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted of harassment and some combination of the gun charges.

Reynolds was one of four suspects charged after Ottawa and Streator police and La Salle County sheriff’s deputies seized guns they allege were either in the hands of felons or had been exchanged on the black market.

Also indicted Tuesday were: Donald Renz, 63, of 1509 Champlain St., Ottawa (disorderly conduct); Jillian Wawerski, 37, of 535 First Ave., Ottawa (unlawful possession of a controlled substance); Claudia Smith, 21, of 1425 Price St., Ottawa (unlawful delivery of a controlled substance); Mark Kresbach, 32, of 908 E.
