Marijuana may be legal now, but if you work for the city of Spring Valley, you’d better think twice before partaking.
The city’s legislative committee outlined policy discussions during this week’s board meeting, which say any city employee is subject to random drug testing and will face consequences for testing positive for drugs including cannabis.
Council member Deb Baltikauski, on behalf of the committee, laid out the ground rules which state employees are subject to pre-employment drug screening and random drug testing — one person will be tested per month.
Baltikauski said as a whole, the council has not decided whether to adapt a zero-tolerance stance, or whether to allow affected persons to undergo counseling should they test positive for any substances.
She went on to say the city will allow employees to disclose addiction issues to their direct supervisor in order to get counseling without being terminated from their position, though it still is up for discussion who will pick up the tab for that.
Baltikauski said Mayor Walt Marini suggested the city pick up the tab, but alderman Ed Jauch favors the individual pay those costs.
The council unanimously approved termination for any employee who appears intoxicated at work and refuses a screening.
