La Salle-Peru sophomore Vincent Walker didn't want to let his head coach down Saturday at the Class 2A Galesburg cross country regional.

L-P head coach Jim O'Hare traditionally sends at least one Cavalier long-distance runner on to sectionals, and this year, Walker was worried L-P may not have one.

"I didn't really think I was going to do it this year, but I didn't want to let my coach down." Walker said. "I knew he wouldn't be mad if any of us didn't go, but I just went out there and tried my hardest."

Walker kept O'Hare's streak going strong.

Walker qualified for the Class 2A East Peoria Sectional by placing in the top five individuals not on an advancing team at Lake Storey Park in Galesburg.

Walker finished 38th overall in a time of 19 minutes, 17 seconds to make the sectional cut.

"That was like a minute slower than I have been running, but I was happy I made it," Walker said. "It was a close fight for sectionals, but I got it. I didn't really like course, but I felt I warmed up pretty good and anything. I didn't really feel good when I got out there. Once we got to the mile, when I heard my time I was like, ‘Wow, that's a lot slower than what I've been doing.' I was getting kind of worried, but I didn't get discouraged and tied my hardest."

That plan worked for the Cavalier runner.

Now Walker and O'Hare will try to advance out of sectionals, which are next Saturday at Illinois Central College in East Peora.

"I am very excited," Walker said. "I am looking forward to the race Saturday. I am going through this last week of practice the best that I can to get ready for Saturday."

Galesburg's Gabe Moreno won the individual regional championship in Galesburg in a time of 16:46.

On the girls side, no one from L-P advanced to sectionals.

Galesburg freshman Stephanie Saey won the individual regional championship with a time of 19:21.
