MINONK - The postseason has a different sentiment for a senior.

Any meet could be the end of a career.

"It feels different because it's the last time," said Fieldcrest senior Guthrie Wyss. "It's sad, but it's exciting, too."

The postseason starts Saturday for all the area cross country teams.

Fieldcrest is the most senior dominated cross country team in the area this year. The Fieldcrest girls team is led by senior Katie Janssen, and seniors Wyss and Kinsly Tarmann lead the Fieldcrest boys team.

Fieldcrest's postseason route sends them to the Class 1A Eureka Regional on Saturday.

Both the boys and girls teams from Fieldcrest should be able to advance as a team to the following Saturday's sectional meet. The top five teams and the top seven individuals not on advancing teams qualify for the sectional.

"The kids looked really good at the meet Tuesday," said Fieldcrest head cross country coach Carol Bauer. "Looking at the competition, the boys are probably the fourth best team at regionals. It's really stacked, but we should safely get out. … For the girls, the girls have a shot at getting out, and I think Katie has a very realistic chance at running at the state meet so she is focusing more on herself in addition to leading the team."

Janssen qualified for the state track meet last spring in the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters. She is trying this fall to qualify for the state cross country meet for the first time.

"I'm kind of nervous, but excited at the same time," Janssen said of starting her quest to qualify for the state cross country meet. "I got a pretty good chance to get out of regionals, and hopefully sectionals, too."

Fieldcrest's first race Saturday is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. with separate girls and boys races at Eureka Lake. Runners advancing from the Eureka Regional will run at the Elmwood-Brimfield Sectional the following Saturday.

This is the seventh consecutive year that Fieldcrest has started the postseason running the regional at Eureka. Wyss feels the team is comfortable with the course going into Saturday.

"I feel confident," Wyss said. "Me and Kinsly know the course really, really well, and the juniors know it well, too. … Just making it to sectionals would be great."
