BYRON — The Hall baseball team has had a tremendous run the last three years.
However, two of those special seasons have ended in the Class 2A Byron Sectional final.
This time it was at the hands of Alleman, who Hall defeated last year for a sectional title en route to a state title. But this time around, the Pioneers rallied in the seventh inning for an 8-7 victory Saturday in Byron.
With Hall leading 7-5 heading into the seventh inning and Trez Rybarczyk on the mound, the Red Devils were looking for back-to-back trips to a super sectional.
But the Pioneers had other ideas. Nate Sheets led off with a single to left field.
Rybarczyk struck out Western Illinois University recruit Chase VanDerGinst. That brought up Zach Carpita, who reached on a Hall error.
Rybarczyk walked Dominic Ferrari to load the bases with one out. The normally pin-point control of Rybarczyk was off against the Pioneers as he walked Xavier Lara to cut the Red Devil’s lead to 7-6.
Then Anthony Glancy pinch hit for Collin Snyder who delivered the biggest hit of his career with a two-run single to left field that scored Tyler Estes and Ferrari to give Alleman an 8-7 lead.
Starting pitcher Jono Berry lined out to Hall left fielder Brayden DeBates to end the top half of the inning.
In the bottom half of the seventh, James Mautino led the inning with a walk and then quickly stole second base before landing at third on a VanDerGinst wild pitch.
