The Rev. E.J. Haanstad, 93, of Mendota Lutheran Home died Oct. 2, 2009, in the home.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in St. John's Lutheran Church, Mendota, with the Rev. Dale Peterson officiating. A private family service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Burial will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Mendota.

There will be no visitation.

He was born April 10, 1916, in Watertown, S.D., to the Rev. Johan and Inga (Jordeth) Haanstad. He married Christine Brodahl on Sept. 5, 1937, in Van Hook, N.D.

He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., in 1943 and was ordained into the ministry on June 13, 1943.

The pastor served parishes in Cogswell, N.D., Cando, N.D., and Arlington, S.D., before accepting a call in 1953 to establish a Home Mission church in South San Francisco, Calif. In 1957, he went to Moe Parish, a rural parish close to Sioux Falls, S.D. His last parish ministry was in Webster, S.D., where he stayed until 1968, when he accepted a call to become chaplain and administrator of the Mendota Lutheran Home. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1981.

Following his retirement, he continued ministering to others by serving as a supply pastor for various congregations, serving as interim pastor for St. John's Lutheran Church in Mendota from 1984 to 1985, and then visiting shut-ins on a daily basis until he was in his late 80s.

He is survived by three sons, J. Morris (JoAnn) Haanstad of Sun City, Ariz., Paul (Nancy) Haanstad of Salt Lake City, Utah and Martin (Evelyn) Haanstad of Neenah, Wis.; three daughters, Dorcas Haanstad of Belmont, Mass., Jeanette (Allan) Severson of Rockford and Elizabeth (Richard) Melton of Davenport, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Haanstad of Schofield, Wis.; and one sister, Esther Anderson of Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his wife on March 3, 2006; three sisters and one grandson.

Pallbearers will be John Haanstad, Isaac Melton, Judah Melton, Micah Melton, Kevin Blakeslee and Allan Severson.
