Richard J. Ernat Sr., 80, of Peru died at 9:45 p.m. Oct. 2, 2009, in Illinois Veterans Home at La Salle.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley. A funeral Mass will be at noon Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Peru. The Rev. Harold Datzman, O.S.B., will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Spring Valley.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today in the funeral home, with a prayer service at 3:45 p.m., and from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday in the funeral home.
Mr. Ernat was born Feb. 4, 1929, in Spring Valley to John and Stella (Slomian) Ernat. He married Lena Liesse on Jan. 30 1954, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Peru.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict. He was a 1947 graduate of Hall High School. He was employed as an asbestos worker for M&O Insulation for 39 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and union Local 17.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Cathy (John) Boll of Aurora and Margaret Kovanic of Normal; four sons, Bill Ernat of Homewood, Don (Chris) Ernat of Lombard, John (Ginger) Ernat of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Larry (Ranae) Ernat of Normal; 12 grandchildren; and three sisters, Jean (Gene) Current of Oglesby, Irene (Ray) Krolak of Rochester, Minn., and Dorothy (Ron) Kuffel of Spring Valley.
He was preceded in death by one son, Richard J. Ernat Jr.
