Doris May (Debo) Grusk, 96, of Peru passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of June 4, 2019.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph’s Church, Peru, with the Rev. Ronald Margherio, O.S.B., officiating and the Rev. Gary Blake and the Rev. Gregory Jarzombek, O.S.B., as co-concelebrants. Burial will follow at Peru City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday in the church with recital of the rosary at 3:30 p.m. There will be no additional visitation on the day of the funeral. Arrangements are through Mueller Funeral Home, Peru.
Doris was born May 12, 1923, in Peru to Harry J. and Margaret (Dee) Debo. She was a graduate of La Salle-Peru High School, class of 1941, and LPO Junior College.
Doris married her high school sweetheart, Robert Edward Grusk on Oct. 12, 1946, in St. Mary’s Church, Peru, officiated by the Rev. Michael Gildea. From this union, they were blessed with five children, Barbara Doherty of Utica, Marilyn (Rudy) Galletti of Peru, Susan (Mark) Van De Wyngaerde of Oglesby, Robert Grusk of La Salle and Lori (Thomas) Tyrrell of Dundee. They lived in Michigan and Ohio while her husband managed F.W. Woolworth stores. They returned to the Illinois Valley area in 1965 to partner in the family business, Debo True Value Hardware.
Doris enjoyed playing bridge in various card clubs including the St. Joseph’s Couples Bridge Group. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Peru, St. Joseph’s Altar and Rosary Society, Platters Club, Potpourri Club, Illinois Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary, La Salle Federated Woman’s Club, Red Cross Mobile Meals and was past president of the Zonta Club. She worked in the family business in her youth and upon her return to the area.
Doris was survived by her beloved husband, Robert who then passed away two days later on Thursday, June 6, 2019. Survivors also include their five children; 13 grandchildren, Brian (Mandy), Kevin (Faith) and Matt (Julia) Doherty, Katherine (Doug) Kotecki, Nick (Kristi) and Neal Galletti, Tara (Will) Gross and Michael Eric Van De Wyngaerde, Nora, Emma and Mary Kate Grusk and T.J. and Kayla Tyrrell; 11 great-grandchildren, James, Connor, Brendan, Rose and May Doherty, Emily, Piper and Molly Kotecki, Grant Galletti and Ella and Gavin Lamboley; a niece, Lee Ann “Dixie” Hannigan; and a nephew, Michael Debo.
She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, James Doherty; grandson, Eric Scott Van De Wyngaerde; two brothers and their wives, Delmer (Dorothy) and George (Ann) Debo and a baby sibling in 1920; two nephews, Delmer and Harry Debo and numerous aunts and uncles. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Joseph’s Altar and Rosary Society, Alzheimer’s Research or Breast Cancer Research.
