MENDOTA — John G. Holzman, 56, of 600 19th St., Mendota was taken into custody around 3 p.m. Monday on felony charges stemming from an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct of a student who was at least 13 but under 18 years of age
The investigation was opened on May 8 while Holzman was a teacher and volleyball coach at Mendota High School. His sudden retirement was accepted after the board of education called a special meeting where they met behind closed doors for an hour on May 28.

According to a press release from Mendota Police Department, the La Salle County State’s Attorney’s office filed the Class 1 felony of criminal sexual assault and a Class 2 felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse charge on Friday. If convicted, he could face 4-15 years in prison on the Class 1 felony charge and 3-7 years for the Class 2 felony.
Police said they collected witness statements, electronic messages, phone records, data and photographs during the course of the investigation.
Holzman’s bond was set at $150,000; he posted $15,000 and was released.
