First responders conducted a technical rope rescue in Spring Valley on Monday afternoon after an SUV plunged into a steep ravine.

Eddie D. Sardon, 48, of 606 E. Cleveland St., Spring Valley and passenger Juan A. Rivera, 46, of 109 10th St., Peru were both transported to St. Margaret’s Hospital by 10/33 Ambulance following the one-vehicle crash around 12:45 p.m. Monday at the far east end of Cleveland Street, according to Spring Valley police.

Sardon was traveling eastbound on Cleveland Street and told police his brakes went out and he was unable to stop his vehicle. It began to pick up speed as he rolled downhill and he tried using his emergency brake, which also did not work.

Firefighters, police and Spring Valley city workers conducted the rescue to remove the patients from the vehicle with ropes and stokes baskets. Peru and Ladd fire departments also assisted at the scene.

Patient conditions were not available at press time.
