OTTAWA — One victim in an Ottawa homicide investigation had a history of domestic abuse by the alleged assailant.

Nicol E. Scolaro, 49, of 320 Deleon St., Ottawa had taken out orders of protection against Christopher B. Stankovich in both 2015 and 2019, according to Kendall County court records. And Kane County court records show Stankovich was charged with criminal misdemeanor domestic battery with Scolaro as the victim in 2015. He was ordered by the court to have no contact with Scolaro in that case.

Most recently, Stankovich was charged with violation of an order of protection against Scolaro in May, according to Kendall County court records. The court case involving that misdemeanor charge was ongoing with the next court date set in July.

Scolaro and Paul E. Ladue, 52, also of 320 Deleon St., Ottawa were found deceased in their residence around 7:10 p.m. Friday after police conducted a wellness check at the residence.

The pair was found with gunshot wounds. Ottawa Detective Sgt. Kyle Booras said he could not give details on whether or not there was forced entry into the Ottawa home. However, Booras said police were able to identify Stankovich as a person of interest shortly after authorities found the victims.

“Based on things that were going on, he was developed as a suspect,” Booras said.

That led Ottawa police detectives and Plano police to conduct a search warrant of Stankovich’s residence — 317 W. Dearborn St., Plano — early Saturday morning.

When officers searched the residence, Stankovich was found dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Booras said this was an isolated incident, and authorities have said since Friday that the public was never in any danger.

Ottawa police were assisted by La Salle County Coroner’s Office, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, Kendall County SRT, Will County SRT, Kendall County Sheriff’s Department, La Salle County State’s Attorney’s Office and Plano police.
